Part 4

The years after Ernesto’s real passing were quiet, but they were filled with purpose.

Teresa turned the mansion into a community center for women who had survived domestic abuse and financial exploitation. Every week, she hosted workshops on financial literacy, self-defense, and emotional healing. The women who came to her left stronger, with tools and confidence they had never been allowed to have before.

Sophia, the young woman who had once delivered the key to room 247 in another story, had become a close friend. She brought her daughter Rosa to visit every summer. The two families had merged in ways none of them had expected. Rosa called Teresa “Abuela Rosa” and spent hours in the garden learning how to grow mint and basil.

One afternoon, as Teresa sat on the porch watching Rosa chase butterflies, Sophia sat beside her.

“You saved me,” Sophia said quietly. “When I showed up at your door with nothing but a key and a broken heart, you opened your home. You opened your heart. I don’t know where I would be without you.”

Teresa smiled and took her hand.

“You saved me too, mija. You brought me back to life when I thought I was already dead inside.”
